YG: Equine Skills (Level 3)

This 18 week programme provides the skills and knowledge to assist in the stabling care, exercise and management of horses. 

Equine Skills (Level 3) offers FREE* spaces for 16-19 year olds under the Youth Guarantee Initiative and a FEE-PAYING option for those who are 20+ years  

Numeracy and Literacy and NCEA credits are achievable through all our courses.

65% of this course is practical using top class equestrian facilities.

  • > Course Outline

    Our National Equestrian Academy at North Canterbury Community College has an outstanding reputation in the equine industry with job opportunities often offered to our students before
    the end of their training.

    The 18 week Level 3 Equine Skills course emphasis is on hands-on training covering all aspects and
    disciplines of horse management, care, riding and industries.

    Students gain the knowledge and skills related to various aspects of equine disciplines and the equine industry.
    As well as care and management in a broad range of situations. 

    Students will gain the New Zealand Certificate in Equine Skills Level 3 qualification.  

  • > Course Content

    The course covers:

    - Daily routine care of horses
    - Feeding
    - Grooming
    - Health, lameness and conformation
    - Industry based skills, studs, clipping etc.
    - Employment skills with industry visits
    - Riding - flat, jumping and lunge 
    - Preparation for industry employment 

  • > Qualifications Offered: Level 3

    As part of this programme you will have the opportunity to complete the qualification below.

    The National Equestrian Academy is located at Community College North Canterbury in Rangiora. 
    The Academy is situated on a picturesque 7 hectare site with wonderful facilities and horses on site.

  • > Start Date: 2020

    Start date July 2019 - End date October 2019.    

    This full time equestrian training course is 17 weeks in duration with a 1 week recess.

     

    Please enquire for 2020 start dates. 

  • > Eligibility Criteria: Riding experience preferred

    A keen interest in training for a career in the Equine Industry.
    There is a preference for students with some riding experience/skill. Students should aim to be confidently jumping at 50-60cm by the end of the course.

    Students are subject to the College enrolment process and must meet admission requirements. 


  • > Course Fees: Free for 16-19 year olds* - Fee Paying for 20+ years

    We have FREE spaces for YG 16-19 year olds and a fee paying option for those are 20+ years

    To qualify for free training under the Youth Guarantee initiative, 
    students must:

    - be 16-19 years of age at the start of the Youth Guarantee programme;
    - be a New Zealand citizen or have New Zealand permanent residency;
    - be prepared to study full-time for 1 year in a level 1-3 programme;
    - not be enrolled in school and a Youth Guarantee programme simultaneously;

    Students must also have an interest in horse care and management. 


    If you are 20+ years old we have a fee-paying option available.  

    The cost of this course for 2019 is $2301.00 (all inclusive)


    Breakdown of costs below:

    Full Programme Fees: $2090.00
    Course Related Costs: $211.00

    *NB. 10% of Programme Fees or $500 (whichever is the lesser amount) is required as deposit on enrolment
    with remaining fees due later in July (exact date to be confirmed).
