About Timaru & South Canterbury

Timaru is the urban hub of South Canterbury.  From the Maori phrase Te Maru meaning "place of shelter", Timaru has been constructed on rolling hills created from the lava flows of the extinct Mt Horrible volcano, which last erupted many thousands of years ago.  Timaru is reknowned for its popular sandy beach of Caroline Bay and its relaxed and unhurried shopping and dining.

The South Canterbury region is well know for its scenery of rolling hills, sweeping plains, braided rivers and unspoilt coastline making it an ideal place to experience the outdoors.
