National Certificate in Community Support Services - Level 3

Community Support Services TrainingCommunity Support Services TrainingCommunity Support Services training at Community Colleges NZ offers a broad base of practical skills to enable you to care for the elderly or people with disabilities effectively and compassionately. It is ideal for people wishing to learn the introductory skills needed to enter into this profession.  This programme is offered as a Job Connection programme and as work-based training.

There are two strands of Community Support Services training available to study:

  • National Certificate in Community Support Services (Core Competencies) - Level 3
  • National Certificate in Community Support Services (Residential) - Level 3

These two strands replace the National Certificate in Support of the Older Person.

The Core Competencies strand provides employees in the aged care industry with core generic skills and knowledge required of support workers. The compulsory areas covered in the programme include: recognising abuse, contributing within a team, behaving professionally, consumers' rights and responsibilities, supporting a person's quality of life, maintaining a safe environment, culturally safe operating principles, self-advocacy, risk management planning, ethical responsibility and the role of the support worker.

The Residential strand recognises the skills and knowledge required of residential-based support workers and has been designed in conjunction with the Core Competencies strand. The compulsory areas covered include: handling people safely, infection control, supporting a person to take prescribed medication, supporting a person's personal care needs, ageing process, observing and recording changes, responding to loss and grief and supporting people with dementia.

You will also experience personal development to further enhance your skills for the workplace. You'll be able to develop essential attributes such as personal presentation, time management, teamwork, dealing with stress and communicating in a working environment.

Finally, you'll complete some active preparation to gain employment. We'll help you as much as we can by placing you out in the industry for practical work experience, helping with your CV, planning for your career, and assisting with job search, job applications and interviews.

Community Support Services training at Community Colleges runs as a full-time course, however, some campuses do have a part-time training option. All campuses are flexible and endeavour to adapt to your needs regarding childcare and other commitments.
