At Dunedin Community College our programmes will inspire you to gain the skills necessary to get started in employment, gain national qualifications or carry on with further education. Not only do you learn practical hands-on skills, you will also learn communication skills and enhance your presentation skills and personal development. Free Youth Programmes (16 & 17 year olds)

Youth@Cookery (44 weeks)
Cookery

This programme covers the basics required to work in a commercial kitchen and is a great programme for young people wanting to work in a restaurant, cafe, hotel, bakery or any commercial kitchen environment.

The programme covers areas such as:

  • cookery methods
  • safe food handling
  • using and maintaining knives
  • characteristics of commercial cookery

Qualifications offered in this programme:

  • National Certificate in Hospitality (Entry Skills) - Level 2

Food & Beverage Service
Youth@Barista (44 weeks)

A programme giving a practical introduction to Barista Skills and the Café Industry for those wishing to make a start in employment at entry level in Café/Restaurant areas.  You will learn how to make great coffee, prepare a cafe quality sandwich and serve it all with a smile.

The programme covers areas such as:
  • specialist coffee making skills, including preparation and presentation
  • service of cafe food including preparation and presentation
  • menu creation & food safety
  • employment relationships
  • customer service and cash handling

Qualifications offered in this programme:

  • National Certificate in Hospitality (Entry Skills) - Level 2

Youth@Outdoors (44 weeks)

This programme is an entry-level qualification for people who are working or intending tothe-package work in the outdoors industry.  You might be guiding trampers on the Milford track or guiding people on mountain bike expeditions.

The programme covers areas such as:

  • tramping and bushcraft
  • leading groups in outdoor environments
  • orienteering and mountain biking
  • first aid in outdoor environments
  • kayaking rock climbing and abseiling

Qualification offered in this programme:

  • National Certificate in Outdoor Leadership - Level 3

Community Support (44 weeks)

Community Support Services

For compassionate, caring youth who wish to learn how to look after the elderly or people with disabilities.

The programme covers areas such as:

  • basic anatomy and physiology
  • first aid and life support
  • client care - learning how to lift and position people safely
  • supporting clients' cultural, physical and emotional needs
  • rights and responsibilities

Qualifications offered in this programme:

  • National Certificate in Community Support Services (Core Competencies) - Level 3
  • National Certificate in Community Support Services (Residential) - Level 3

Free Adult Programmes (18+ and eligibility criteria apply)

Job Connection (13 weeks)

To be included on this course you must be deemed eligible by Work & Income and obtain a referral from them.  This course is not qualification based. If you are seeking qualifications then please consider one of our other courses.

If you are ready for work, but are struggling to find a job, our Job Connection programme is focused on enabling you to develop the skills that will enhance your employability and assist you to find work.  As well as general employment and personal development skills, the programme offers a wide range of practical training (as outline below) in industries with employment opportunities. Job Connection has a dedicated workbroker who works one-on-one with you to assist you with specific work search skills such as goal setting, job search, cold calling, CV preparation and application letters. The workbroker also liaises with employers and Work & Income to foster opportunities.

Barista/Front of House

Dunedin Training Courses - Back To Work
This training offers a wide range of skills in a fun-filled environment. You will learn about:
  • espresso coffee preparation and service
  • preparation and presentation of cafe style food
  • customer service, table service, counter service, buffet and function service
  • food safety and hygiene (unit standard 167)
  • health and safety
Retail/Customer Service
This training is ideal for people wanting a job in retail,  office work or anywhere working with the public. Skills you will learn include:
  • customer service
  • cash handling and eftpos use
  • gift wrapping; merchandising
  • telephone and reception skills
  • general office and clerical skills

For compassionate, caring people who wish to learn how to look after the elderly or people with disabilities.  This programme can be delivered on-the-job so those working in the industry can gain nationally recognised qualifications without disrupting their employment.

The programme covers areas such as:

  • basic anatomy and physiology
  • first aid and life support
  • client care - learning how to lift and position people safely
  • supporting clients' cultural, physical and emotional needs
  • rights and responsibilities

This programme can be offered as a work-based training programme. It is delivered on-the-job so those working in the industry can gain nationally recognised qualifications without disrupting their employment. It is also offered pre-employment with work experience to practice your skills. This certificate pathways to the National Certificate in Community Support Services (Residential) - Level 3.
