New Direction for North Canterbury

We have recently reviewed the services that we offer at Community College North Canterbury to ensure we continue to meet the training and employment needs of the community.  We have decided not to renew the Training for Work ‘Job Connection’ and ‘Work Based Training’ programmes at our College after 30 June 2013.  Our decision has not been taken lightly as we have provided these services since we began in 1983 and have long term staff extremely skilled in this area of training.

The labour market in North Canterbury & wider Canterbury has altered dramatically in the last 12-24 months due largely to the employment growth associated with the Christchurch rebuild.  Coupled with recent benefit reforms, this has resulted in low unemployment which is predicted to continue for the foreseeable future.

Employment growth in the region has not applied to youth and, particularly in North Canterbury, they have limited access to training and support.  We currently provide youth support through our ‘Youth Guarantee’ courses and ‘Youth Service’.

Our strategic decision is to focus on our youth contracts and relinquish the Training for Work business in North Canterbury.   By concentrating our energy and expertise on youth needs and by specialising in this area of our business, we will be able to provide a comprehensive service to better serve the needs of our youth. With a full range of youth services, encompassing training and education, mentoring and support (with referral to specialist agencies) and in some cases money management, we believe we will maximise our outcomes for youth and achieve an overall high level of performance.  This is vital for us in order to secure future business with TEC for Youth Guarantee.

Regretfully this change of focus for the college has impacted on staff with some redundancies being inevitable.  We will, however, continue our commitment to providing quality training and employment services to North Canterbury.
