At North Canterbury Community College  our programmes will inspire you to gain the skills necessary to get started in employment, gain national qualifications or carry on with further education. Not only do you learn practical hands-on skills, you will also learn communication skills and enhance your presentation skills and personal development. This includes learning about teamwork, time management, job search practices and much more.

Free Youth Programmes (16 & 17 year olds)

Youth@Cookery (44 weeks)
Cookery

This programme covers the basics required to work in a commercial kitchen. Take the first step towards becoming a professional chef.

The programme covers areas such as:

  • cookery methods
  • safe food handling
  • using and maintaining knives
  • characteristics of commercial cookery

Qualifications offered in this programme:

  • National Certificate in Hospitality (Entry Skills) - Level 2
  • National Certificate in Hospitality (Cookery) - Level 3

Food & Beverage Service
Youth@Barista (44 weeks)

A programme giving a practical introduction to Barista Skills and the Café Industry for those wishing to make a start in employment at entry level in Café/Restaurant areas.

The programme covers areas such as:

  • specialist coffee making skills, including preparation and presentation
  • service of cafe food including preparation and presentation
  • menu creation & food safety
  • employment relationships
  • customer service and cash handling

Qualifications offered in this programme:

  • National Certificate in Hospitality (Entry Skills) - Level 2
  • HSI Customer Service Award
  • HSI Barista Certificate
  • Food Safety Certificate

Youth@Retail & Salon Support (44 weeks)

This programme is an entry-level qualification for people who are working or intending toRetail-Hero_compressed work in the retail industry.  As well as the generic retail component of the programme, there is a focus on retailing in the hairdressing and beauty industries.

The programme covers areas such as:

  • customer service & sales skills
  • participating in a team environment
  • stock display & stocktaking
  • career planning, CV preparation
  • literacy and numeracy

Qualification offered in this programme:

  • National Certificate in Retail - Level 2

If you are ready to work, but are struggling to find a job, then we will match you with a suitable employer in the field of your choice. Work-Based Training provides you with on-the-job experience.

Equestrian (36 weeks)

The Equestrian Training Programme takes place at the National Equestrian Academy Equine-Hero
based at the Community College North Canterbury.  This comprehensive course has an outstanding reputation in the equine industry with many job opportunities offered to our students before the end of their course.  Please click here to find out more about the National Equestrian Academy.

  • practical day-to-day care and keeping of horses
  • theoretical knowledge of horse management
  • riding skills, including arena work, show jumping, cross country, lunging , riding and leading and co-coaching
  • caring and attending to horses situated in and away from a usual environment

  • National Certificate in Equine - Level 3

Community Support (36 weeks)Community Support Services

For compassionate, caring people who wish to learn how to look after the elderly or people with disabilities.  This programme can be delivered on-the-job so those working in the industry can gain nationally recognised qualifications without disrupting their employment.

The programme covers areas such as:

  • basic anatomy and physiology
  • first aid and life support
  • client care - learning how to lift and position people safely
  • supporting clients' cultural, physical and emotional needs
  • rights and responsibilities

Qualifications offered in this programme:

  • National Certificate in Community Support Services (Core Competencies) - Level 3
  • National Certificate in Community Support Services (Residential) - Level 3

Licence Controller Qualification (1.5 days)

If you work in hospitality and want to achieve your Manager's Certificate then this course is your first step. The 1 ½ day programme covers the requirements of the Licence Controller Qualification (LCQ). Unit standards gained in this qualification:

  • 16705 Demonstrate knowledge of host responsibility requirements as a duty manager
