Scott Beckinsale – Applied Sport, 2007

"I studied on the Applied Sport programme at Community College North Canterbury in 2007 and graduated at the end of that year. I left school as I wasn’t getting too much out of it. I have always been really interested in sport, so when I found out about the course at the local Community College from the tutor, who coached me at rugby, I was keen to enrol.

There are heaps of things I liked about the programme, the practical hands-on experiences and because of the small group size there was lots of one-on-one time with the tutor. The programme was a lot of fun and learning was non-pressured, but because the content was really interesting I didn’t mind doing the work. It also helped me develop with my own sport, by learning about nutrition and training.

We had lots of practical experience with coaching in schools and teams. This helped me to make useful contacts in the industry and boosted my confidence – I have definitely become more mature.

Whilst coaching in schools another student, Ricki Jacobs, and I saw a real lack of participation in sport. With the support of the College we looked into this further and saw part of the reason being due to a lack of in-depth knowledge about sport from the teaching staff.

So, Ricki and I, seeing an opportunity to make a difference and using the knowledge learnt at the Community College, worked together to build a project to help increase participation in sport at schools in our area. The programme we run sees us coaching sport to Year 4 to Year 8 at primary schools in the North Canterbury area. We now work full time on this, under the umbrella of North Canterbury Sport and Recreation Trust who have supported us along the way.

In its second year, we have 32 schools participating and have recently received funding from SPARC and Adidas.

We still have regular contact with the College and would like to thank them for all their support. My year at the College was one of the best I have had and the decision to study at the College was probably the best I have ever made."
