Amber Inns says that she wouldn’t be working as a full time office junior with Dunedin law firm Anderson Lloyd if it wasn’t for the help she received from Erin at Work’n it Out.
“I’m a completely different person now. I used be unmotivated, and suffered from anxiety issues, but Erin helped me get the counselling that I needed to overcome this. She also helped to improve my confidence levels and the skills I needed to get a job.”
Amber was first contacted by WIO in late 2008. Not long after she moved to Balclutha with her partner, who was taking up a position on a dairy farm. She struggled to get work there herself, apart from some part-time hospitality jobs. That’s when WIO called again and Amber decided to take up the offer of some extra help and support.

“Hospitality wasn’t what I wanted to do, and my partner and I had also decided to move back to Dunedin. Once we got back Erin and I started meeting each week. I told her that I was interested in doing office work, after having done temporary work for Anderson Lloyd before we went to Balclutha. She helped me to make up a CV and think about ways that I could improve my skills.”
Erin arranged for Amber to attend the Treehouse Programme, where her tutor Dean helped her to up-skill in areas such customer service, retail and hospitality. “Dean also had a big part in developing my confidence and skills.”
Amber was eventually asked to do some more temporary work for Anderson Lloyd, and when an office junior’s position became available she was asked to go in for an interview. “Now I’m working here full time and I love it.”
Amber says she would have no hesitation in recommending WIO to other young people.
“They shouldn’t be afraid to ask for help, especially if they feel like they are struggling with work or even personal issues. It’s definitely worth it in the long run. I wouldn’t be where I am today without Erin’s support. I appreciate everything she has done for me.”
When Nicole-Jane Laidler was contacted by the Work’n it Out team she was doing “absolutely nothing” apart from some occasional part time weekend work at Mercy Hospital.
“I had left school at the start of the year and liked the idea of reception or child minding work. Then I started working with Erin at Work’n it Out and she really helped me to sort out my goals. We did quite a few activities to find out the type of jobs that would match my interests and personality. It turned out that I was a people person who would suit a role involved with people.”
Erin also helped Nicole-Jane to write up a CV and sample job application letters and signed her up to WIO job board. “Every week I was emailed available jobs that were relevant to my interests. I decided to apply for a full time telemarketing job selling bug spray services, and got it.”
Nicole-Jane is now selling heat-pumps by the same method and enjoys her work. “It’s great to be earning my own money and I’m still interested in progressing into a receptionist role eventually.” She says that she wouldn’t be on her current career path without Erin’s help. “When I met Erin I also had a few family issues and she guided me through them as well as helping me with my own goals and direction. I can definitely recommend Work’n it Out to others. Everyone there is really friendly, understanding and helpful.”
