What is Youth Service?


Youth Service is a FREE youth coaching service providing wrap around support for young people. If you're 16-17 years old and need help with education, training and work-based learning, Youth Service may be able to help you. 

We give young people the guidance, practical support and encouragement they need to create a plan, relating to work or training, that suits them.

Make the best decisions for your future. 

Youth Service is available at our offices in Rangiora, Timaru, Dunedin and Invercargill.

Financial Assistance ​


Work and Income

You may qualify for some of the following types of financial assistance from Work and Income. Your Youth Advisor will work with you to find out if any of these options are suitable for you. There are a number of obligations or things that you must do to receive these payments.

  • Youth Payment (YP)
  • Young Parent Payment (YPP) (16-19 year olds)
  • Guaranteed Childcare Assistance Payment (GCAP)
  • Additional Financial Support

StudyLink

Thinking about studying? StudyLink may be able to help pay for your study through allowances and loans. Your Youth Advisor can help you check your eligibility and apply.

Our Youth Advisors


We will support you to make good decisions for your future and will meet with you regularly to talk about how things are going. If you encounter a problem or something changes for you, you can talk to Youth Advisor about how best to deal with it. We want to help you achieve your goals. 

The kinds of things we can support you with are:
  • talk about where you are and where you want to be
  • figure out what might be stopping you succeeding at school, training or in work-based learning
  • help you get back to school or training course 
  • help you make a plan to get into other education, training or work-based learning
  • put together an action plan to help you reach your goals
  • support you in school or training
  • help you if you get off-track
  • update your plan when things change
  • link you to other services
  • be your go-to person​

If you are receiving financial assistance from Work and Income, we will also:
  • provide on-going support and guidance
  • help you manage your money well
  • make sure you are living somewhere reasonable and affordable
  • get you back on track if you are struggling to meet the requirements needed to receive your financial support
  • link you to other services you might need

If you have a child/children: 
  • help you get them into early childhood education for the time you’re in school or training
  • help you enrol them at a Primary Health Organisation medical centre or doctor, and with a Well Child provider like Plunket
